Utah County Wedding Photography: A City by City Planning Guide

The Problem Nobody Mentions

Most of what ranks when you search for Utah County wedding photography is portfolio pages. Pretty photos, a contact form, a line about loving light. I get it. I spent six years as a Utah Realtor, and I know a sales pitch when I hear one.

But I feel like almost nobody tells couples the boring stuff that decides how the day actually goes. Which canyon needs a pass. Which garden needs a reservation. Which road is gated in November. Which campus does not allow hired photographers at all.

My mom was cleaning out her attic and wanted me to keep my old wedding photography books. I told her it's not the same photography anymore, the vibes have changed. She did not approve of that answer. Honestly, I think the logistics have changed even more than the style.

What I Have Figured Out

The photos couples love usually come from a plan that fits the place, the season and the rules. The camera matters a little. The plan matters a lot more. I feel like that is the part most couples skip, and it is not their fault.

It is crazy to me how much of a wedding day comes down to a gate, a permit or a sunset. On September 22 this year, the sun set in Provo at 7:23 in the evening, according to time.now. time Summer sunsets land much later and winter ones much earlier, so your whole timeline moves with the calendar.

Utah does make the legal part pretty easy. A Utah County marriage license costs most couples $71.75, there is no waiting period, and it has to be used within 32 days. provoutahcounty The Clerk suggests applying about 10 to 15 days before the wedding. utahcounty

Utah County, City by City

North: Lehi, Saratoga Springs and Eagle Mountain

Lehi means Thanksgiving Point for a lot of couples. Posed photos at Ashton Gardens need a Photo Pass booked in advance, $100 for non members or $90 for members for up to two hours, separate from admission, per the Thanksgiving Point photography policy. Same day reservations are not available, bridal sessions go through their Events team, and drones are not allowed anywhere on the property. The policy also bans commercial and portfolio use of photos taken there, thanksgivingpoint so read it before you build a day around it.

Spring is the big one. The Tulip Festival at Ashton Gardens ran through May 16 in 2026, and Thanksgiving Point says the Tulip Festival Photo Pass is the only pass that allows posed photography during the festival. thanksgivingpoint

Saratoga Springs has the Saratoga Springs Utah Temple, dedicated August 13, 2023. The Lehi Utah Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson on April 7, 2024, and Church News lists it as still in planning and design, per Church News. For Eagle Mountain, I did not find a public photo spot with posted rules I would stand behind, so I would confirm each location directly.

Northeast Bench: Alpine, Highland, Cedar Hills, American Fork, Pleasant Grove and Lindon

American Fork Canyon and the Alpine Loop are the headliners. The Forest Service charges nothing for nonstop travel, but if you stop at a developed site you need a pass on display, $10 for three days, $20 for seven days or $60 for a year. America the Beautiful passes work too. usdausda The Forest Service also says to avoid weekends and holidays, and I would take that seriously in fall. usda

Photographers are a separate question, and it gets a bit murky. The Forest Service commercial photography application asks for at least 10 business days of notice, a $50 per day land use fee for still photography with 1 to 10 people on its 2025 schedule, processing fees and $1 million in liability insurance. usdausda Its filming and photography guidance also says photography that is part of an already allowed activity, like a wedding, may not need a permit. usda I think the honest move is to call the Pleasant Grove Ranger District before booking.

This group also has two temples. The Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple in American Fork was dedicated in 1996, and the Lindon Utah Temple was dedicated May 3, 2026, the seventh temple in Utah County, per Church News. thechurchnews +3

Central: Orem, Vineyard and Provo, Including Provo Canyon and Sundance

BYU is a pretty common ask, so here is the rule. The BYU filming and photography policy says the university does not allow people or businesses to photograph on campus and use it for promotional, marketing or commercial purposes. Personal photos are fine. byu I would get written permission from University Communications before planning a paid session there.

Utah Lake State Park charges $20 per vehicle from April through October and $10 from November through March, per its fee page. utah The park says professional photography needs a special use permit, and it is a no fly zone for drones because of the Provo Airport. utah

Up the canyon, the Kyhv Peak Overlook is a drive, not a hike, and Provo.com notes people take engagement photos there. The road usually gates for snow from around November 1 to around May 1, and those are not published deadlines. provo The Alpine Loop also drops past Sundance Resort into Provo Canyon, per the Forest Service. usda For Vineyard, I would confirm spots one by one.

South: Springville, Mapleton, Spanish Fork, Salem, Payson and Santaquin

Payson has the Payson Utah Temple, dedicated in 2015, and President Russell M. Nelson announced the Spanish Fork Utah Temple on April 6, 2025, during general conference. Payson is also the north end of the Nebo Loop, which Nephi City says closes for snow from late October through June or July. utah UDOT tells drivers to check locally for Nebo Loop closures, ibi511 so I would never plan a late season Nebo shoot without a backup.

Kyhv Peak Road eventually runs south toward Hobble Creek Canyon, per Provo.com. provo Forest Service permits down here go through the Spanish Fork Ranger District. usda For Springville, Mapleton, Salem and Santaquin, I would call the city about park rules before you plan anything big.

My Utah County Tie In

In high school I worked at Cornbelly's pumpkin patch. Today Cornbelly's runs its flagship location at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi and a second one on its home farm in Spanish Fork, open September through October, per Utah Agritourism. utah It is kinda funny to me that it sits right next to the gardens couples book for bridals.

I also spent years in hotels, checking in snowbirds coming for the Greatest Snow on Earth. I drove a two wheel drive stick shift that got stuck everywhere, usually while I was helping guests get unstuck from the parking lot. I learned about Utah winters the humbling way. I think winter photos can be great, but I would plan around snow and gates, not hope around them.

What Actually Matters

On one hotel shift, a wedding party got ready in our meeting room. They told me they had planned the whole thing in about a month. And it came together.

I think about them a lot. The day does not need to be perfect. It needs a plan that fits where you are, and people who show up for you. At the end of the day, that is what ends up in the photos.
